Admissions 2012/2013 Admissions & ToursFor families with children turning 2 before Wednesday, September 5, 2012, you are welcome to attend any of the tours listed on the above schedule based on availability. You must attend a tour to apply to Explorers Academy Preschool. Admission to E.A.P. is first-come, first-served, though we reserve the right to ensure program diversity. Please note the following important dates for the 2012/2013 school year which runs from Wednesday, September 5, 2012 through Friday, June 22, 2013. September 6, 2011: Our office will begin accepting applications for families who have already attended a preschool tour. Applications are accepted by email or by fax only.Important Admissions Dates:1. December2, 2010: Early application deadline. You must be currently enrolled or have attended a tour on or before this date to submit your application. A deposit of 4 weeks tuition for your enrollment schedule is due to secure your child's space in the 2012/2013 school year upon acceptance into the program. 2. March 2, 2011: Final application deadline. You must have attended a tour on or before this date to submit your application. A deposit of 4 weeks tuition for your enrollment schedule is due to secure your child's space in the 2012/2013 school year. 3. December 9, 2011: Early applicants will be notified of their acceptance. Applicants must respond to offer of admission and make payment of deposit by December 16, 2011 in order to reserve the requested space(s) at Explorers Academy Preschool. 4. March 9, 2012: Remaining applicants will be notified of their acceptance. Applicants must respond to offer of admission and make payment of deposit by March 16, 2012 in order to reserve the requested space(s) at Explorers Academy Preschool. Applications received after March 2, 2012 will be processed in order of receipt if space remains available in Explorers Academy Preschool. Summer Program:Summer camp registration for the early bird rate begins on December 2, 2011. Summer camp requires a 2-week minimum commitment and we can accommodate a M/W/F and T/R schedule only for part-time spots. Summer preschool hours are 8am-3pm with a free summer extended day option until 6pm. Early registration is $395 per week through 12/31 and $425 per week beginning 1/1. Summer camp runs through Wednesday, August 29, 2011. Parents who wish to enroll on a payment plan may break their payment up into 4 months Dec, Jan, Feb, and March with all camp fees due by March 2, 2011. This summer, Ms. Christine, Ms. Elisa, and Ms. Dina will be on board for summer fun including tons of educational activities and outdoor play. Program Changes:The 2012/2013 school year will mark the beginning of a new daily schedule. As of the start of our summer program, preschool hours will be Monday-Friday from 8am-3:30pm with a complimentary after-school extended day until 6pm. There will no longer be a part-time half-day option in the mornings or afternoons.

Elisa DePalmaEAP Teaching Director/TeacherElisa DePalma is on board as the Teaching Director at Explorers Academy Preschool as well as heading up the Bumble Bee Classroom, full of some of the cutest two-years-olds we've ever laid eyes on! A New York City native, this Manhattan girl graduated from Hunter College in 2009 with a BA, majoring in English and minoring in Psychology. Elisa loved Hunter so much that she stayed for a few more years to complete an MS in Early Childhood Education. For this educator, working with children marks the achievement of a lifelong aspiration, one that she has been working towards since she was a child. A New Yorker through and through, this sports fanatic proves that New York is the friendliest big city around, as her compassion, sincerity, amiability and kindness extend beyond the classroom to every person she interacts with on a daily basis. Elisa is looking forward to a wonderful year with her students at Explorers Academy Preschool. She knows that no two children are the same but that every single one requires love and attention and she looks forward to working with those understandings toward her academic goals for her class, including finishing the year with every child able to recognize the letters of the alphabet and begin tracing his/her name. As much as she hearts New York, Elisa's eventual plan is to leave the four seasons behind and transplant herself to Florida where she will continue teaching as well as enjoying her downtime hobbies, including cooking, baking, playing sports, dancing, reading and, of course, spending time with her loved ones. When she finds the time, Elisa would love to put pen to paper and write a children's book to contribute a lasting testament of the importance she places on literacy in early childhood!

Dina DvirtsEAP TeacherDina teaches the Dragonflies room at Explorers Academy Preschool, which holds the middle-range of children according to age. As a 2009 Brooklyn College graduate, Dina chose a major in Early Childhood Education to head up her minor in Classics because she has so much working with children. Teaching and caring for tots allows Dina to witness people learning new things and maturing so that even on days that prove tougher than others, she leaves school feeling as though she was doing something meaningful all day as there is truly never a dull moment when working with children! Dina spent the first 10 years of her life living in St. Petersburg, Russia, and remains a fan of all things cold-weather-related, which explains her passion for watching hockey as a staunch supporter of the NY Rangers! We are thrilled to have Dina on board as a group teacher at Explorers Academy Preschool. Her ability to empathize with children enables her to relate to them easily, providing her with a unique understanding of how her students feel and why they do the things they do. While pursuing her Masters, Dina is already looking ahead to the next degree to add to her collection, with an eye to adding a science degree in the coming years. When she's not preparing lessons for her students or completing coursework, she spends her time reading, biking or pursuing amateur photography as a hobby. Even a casual observer quickly sees that Dina's ability to stay calm and positive and not to overreact in any given situation makes her a perfect candidate to work with the sweeties in her classroom each day. The Dragonflies teacher hopes to have children of her own in the coming years, but her more immediate goal is to guide her students toward the use of new vocabulary, especially in order to aid in solving conflicts with their peers. Dina is hopeful that by the end of the year some of her students will have mastered using words to resolve conflicts to such a degree that they may even be able to resolve some conflicts among themselves with limited teacher intervention. A worthy pursuit indeed!

Christine RolandEAP TeacherChristine Roland teaches the Explorers Academy Preschool students in the Grasshopper Room. She graduated from Brooklyn College, cum laude, in 2009 with a major in Early Childhood Education and Special Education and a concentration in Children Studies. She has always recognized the intrinsic bond that she has when interacting with children and is particularly amazed by the process of development. Christine realizes the significance of a child's early years as precursors for each child's future. To know that she can play a part in positively impacting the future of children gives her a great sense of purpose and fulfillment. The idea that she has the opportunity to help a child build upon his/her sense of self is personally rewarding. She truly enjoys the one-on-one interactions, as it allows her to gain a greater understanding of the childs development. In understanding the unique nature of each child, Christine has developed an interest in the practice of education that values individuality. As an educator she has found that this style of teaching works best to target areas of strengths and builds upon any weaknesses. Christine plan to spend the next few years studying and building upon my knowledge in the field of Special Education. Ultimately her goal is to take her experience in her profession overseas working in Haiti, where her parents emigrated from before she was born. Her plan is to work with non-profit organizations to provide aid in areas where she can and apply for grants to open up free educational programs. In her downtime, Christine enjoys playing volleyball, singing and traveling. When she gathers up the courage, this future world traveller hopes to add skydiving to he resume. Her goal for the EAP students in her charge this year is for each child to gain a greater sense of confidence in their abilities to manipulate and understand the world they live in.

Shani HadjianEAP Teaching AssistantShani is a Teacher's Assistant at Explorers Academy Preschool. Shani graduated from The Hartt School at The University of Hartford in 2009. As a BFA in Music Theatre, this Midwestern gal (Shani hails from Ohio with time spent in California as well) knew that to pursue her craft NYC was the place to be! For a lady who's been known to break into song and dance or laugh out loud at any given moment, working with children is a perfect fit as well. Shani's insistence to view life as happy in spite of all of the financial, personal and world struggles that go on in the adult world make her personality a better fit for the younger crowd! While she's following her dreams and pursuing her semi-pro hobbies of photography and singing in hopes of making an honest living in one of her desired fields in the coming years, we're thrilled to have Shani and her policy of safety and fun first on board at Explorers Academy Preschool! Barring a long vacation to Greece, the cultural homeland that Shani has always wanted to pay a visit to, we're hopeful that we'll have this Jill of All Trades with us for many adventures to come! While assisting at Explorers Academy Preschool, Shani plans to work toward instilling in our students confidence in whatever they do, a worthwhile goal if we've ever heard one! Rae StimsonEAP Teaching AssistantRae Stimson is an Art Teacher and Teaching Assistant at Explorers Academy preschool. She grew up in the country in Fairfield, Iowa where she spent most of her time drawing, sculpting and observing plants and animals. She relocated out-of-state when she was 15 to pursue her passion for art at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. After graduating she continued her studies at Naropa University in Boulder, CO, from which she received a degree in visual art and a minor in yoga in 2011. Rae works in a wide variety of mediums including woodcarvings, mezzotint printmaking, needle felting and alternative process photography. She moved to NYC to pursue her visual art career, to have access to museums and rare films, and to be with friends. Rae loves to spend time with children because they have fresh, creative outlooks to share. She enjoys watching children make art because they do it out of sheer enjoyment of the process, rather than to create a finished product, resulting in an exceptional boldness of line and color. In teaching the children she likes to nurture this pleasure of process and to inspire them by showing them new potentials in art making. Rae intends to continue to teach art and make art commissions part time, and to create her own art in her free time. She hopes to eventually show her art in museums and to live somewhere that is spacious enough for a pet pig and tortoise.

Karine NguyenFrench Teacher Karine teaches French to the students at Explorers Academy Preschool. She holds a degree in International Business, but Karine's real passion is teaching children, as the pure joy and beauty she experiences as she watches them grown is unmatched. This New York transplant is originally from Belgium, loving every minute of her life in the city where, as she puts it, "Anything is possible!" Karine is delighted to be with Explorers Academy Preschool for the year, but she hopes to move onward to achieve her dream of teaching French in Vietnam in the coming years. When Karine is not busy passing on her love of the French language and it's beauty to the children at Explorers Academy Preschool this linguist can be found traveling the world, learning and practicing new languages and playing competitive ping pong!

Kaya ArnouxMandarin TeacherKaya teaches Mandarin Chinese at Explorers Academy Preschool. She graduated from National ChengChi University with a B.A. as a Communications major and an English Literature minor. in 2007. She hails from Taipei, Taiwan, and moved to New York in 2008 to be with her beloved, to whom she is now wed. Kaya is currently pursuing an M.F.A. in Creative Writing. She enjoys working with children as they inspire her to find pleasure in life's simple joys. Her warm personality makes her a perfect fit to teach preschoolers. When not teaching or being taught herself, Kaya can be found writing, creating music and enjoying the company of her family. Her long-term goals include eventually spending time living in Africa, with a 5-year-plan that she's hopeful will lead her on the path to becoming a children's book author. While Kaya understands that every child is unique and special, she is hopeful that by the end of her time with the tots this year the children will be so enthused about speaking Mandarin that they'll burst out with Chinese words instead of English throughout the day! Angelyn Faust Ballet TeacherAngelyn teaches Ballet at Explorers Academy Preschool as well as the Little Swan class at NY City Explorers' Learning Garden in Prospect Heights, at 186 Underhill Ave. She graduated from Minnesota State University in Mankato in 2006, Summa Cum Laude as an Acting major and Dance minor. Angelyn loves the fact that children she teaches truly want to learn and are completely honest, which she finds refreshing and, at times, hilarious, depending upon what comes out of their mouths! Angelyn was born and raised in Minnesota, but on a family vacation to New York City at the age of 10 she made the early decision that she wanted to live here as soon as she could. After graduating and getting married, Angelyn and her husband finally "had the guts," as she puts it, to pack it up and move to the Big Apple. Four years later, she's still pleased with her decision, and so are we! As a Harry Potter fan who has not only read all seven books but also listened to the audio books and even dressed in character to attend opening day at the movie theatre, there's a goofy streak in Angelyn that the little ones she teaches connect with big time! In the children at Explorers Academy Preschool and the other tots she works with, both independently and at a nonprofit theatre company, Angelyn hopes to instill a lifelong love of dance. This dancer works out on and off the dance floor, running around with her puppy and husband as time allows, but makes sure to bring some balance to her life by snuggling up with a good library book and homemade baked goods as often as she can! As a gal who has worked with both children and adults, Angelyn has learned many a thing from both groups. From children, her most valuable lesson has been, amongst many others...that the importance of bathroom breaks is not to be underestimated!
Ricardo LouisKarate TeacherRicardo Louis teaches Karate at Explorers Academy Preschool. This Haitian-born graduate of Brooklyn College majored in Biology at Brooklyn College and got right to work pursuing a second degree following his 2010 graduation, which he hopes will lead him down the path of becoming a physician's assistant. Ricardo's long term career goals may eventually lead him into the hospital, but he hopes to still be able to make time for the classroom, where he intends to continue teaching karate to children. His love of teaching, passed down to him from his Sensei, joins perfectly with his love of being a positive influence in the children with whom he works. Ricardo truly loves seeing children happy and having fun! He also appreciates the personal growth that he finds comes from working with children, as his patience and flexibility are developed as he learns to work with the differing personalities and abilities among the children he teaches in order to have a successful class each and every session. This surprisingly shy fitness-buff may teach karate for a living, but in his downtime he devotes equal attention to basketball as well and hopes to add sky-diving to the mix in the near future. Once his muscles need a rest, he surrenders to a new release and an air conditioned movie theatre, but between now and June he'll spent most of his energy planning ways to help develop the hand-eye coordination of the preschoolers under his wing!

Brooklyn's go-to people for safe, fun and reliable childcare, NY City Explorers, are excited to launch our brand new Afterschool Adventures program! With pick-up from area schools included and a full afternoon of activities led by child-favorite counselor Edwin Guzman (Director of our Nickelodeon Parents Choice Award-winning Summer Adventure Camp!), the time from class dismissal through 6:00pm is guaranteed to be the best part of the day!Afterschool Adventures' daily schedule includes designated quiet homework time with homework-help staff available, snack time devoted to appreciating healthful foods with a focus on local and organic options, imaginative and creative play including games and crafts, and ample time for active outdoor play on our attached gated outdoor playground!Sessions run as follows: FALL September 12, 2011 - December 31, 2011WINTER January 1, 2012 - March 31,2012SPRING April 1, 2012 - June 24, 2012IMPORTANT: Participation in Afterschool Adventures is contractual. Your weekly schedule is not ammendable from week to week and is locked-in on a per-session basis. A schedule of Mondays and Tuesdays only, for example, is available, but must be committed to for the entire session. Afterschool Adventures follows the NYC public schools calendar, and dates that school is not in session, Afterschool Adventure is not in session. NY City Explorers offers School Break Adventure Camp trips on many of those dates, excepting major holidays, and families enrolled in Afterschool Adventures are invited to attend with a 10% discount.
